Questions: Message #1 Elizabeth.
- Discuss what you knew about Elizabeth before looking at Luke 1-2?
- Luke 1:1-4 is meant to give us an assurance about what was written. What kind of assurance does it give you?
- Luke 1:6 says that “They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. Do you think there is a difference for a man and a woman to say this? Yes? No? what is it?
- In Luke 1:7 Luke writes “But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.” In that culture, barrenness lay squarely on the woman (wrongly of course). But can you imagine what that felt like for Elizabeth? What about Zacharias? Do you think he might have struggled? It says later that he prayed for this child to be born. Can you imagine praying so long for something? Have you? Are you?
- When you read the account of Zacharias from Luke 1:12-20. Do you see anything contradictory in his behavior? Contrast that with Elizabeth’s response. How do they differ?
- The voiceless in our society are somehow no different. The child in the womb, the aging on our society, and the religious, all seem to share the same characteristics. What should that mean for us today? John calls himself a voice, in the wilderness, when calling people to Christ. Do you think we have been silenced?
- Finally, I asked the question, “Why are we Blessed?” How would you answer that question? In what ways are we blessed in Christ? What would show our community how much we are blessed?
