Questions Sermon 13 Being Righteous 1
Questions Sermon 13 Being Righteous (Part 1) Matthew 5:17)
- The Christian’s attitude and understanding to the Law of God is crucial to a life of righteousness. For many Christians, an understanding has revolved around one of a number of approaches to God’s Law. (1) It was just for Israel not the church. (2) It is good, holy and righteous, but all it does is condemn me. (3) We are no longer under it, in some way. (4) My life is all about Jesus, not the Law (5) My delight is in following Jesus, not rules. And many other ways. What are the two things Jesus says about His purpose in coming according to this passage?
- My first man point is focusing on a man-centered approach to the Law of God. If you can, think through your own approach. How would you describe it?
- We may not believe that the OT should be abolished, but are there ways of doing this without doing it in practice? What would they be?
- The Pharisees were looked upon as the most holy examples of obedience by the common person on the street. Yet Jesus is not pleased by them at all. He accused them of replacing the Law with their traditions. Think of your walk with God today, how could we do the same?
- What about being church, could we be doing the same? Is there anything we do that looks more like church tradition and not rooted in biblical truth?
- What teaching(s) would we lose by disregarding the OT?
- Jesus came to fulfil the Law and the Prophets. Do you remember the three ways? (1) He fulfilled the revealed prophecies concerning Himself (2) He interpreted the Law and the Prophets perfectly (examples are right after this passage) (3) He obeyed it perfectly. Can you recall the OT prophecies?
- Look at Luke 24:25-27, What is Jesus saying here?
- Look at Luke 24:44-45, what is Jesus saying here?
- Lastly, I say that for us now, the reason we see the OT and NT as one book, is because it is all the Word of God, and Jesus said that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). I said it had two benefits (1) It makes us wise, but more importantly, it is God’s! that is sufficient. In that light of that, how the Scriptures expose us and at the same time, some thing we delight in, Psalm 119:97?
